Curriculum
Language Arts
We have a new Language Arts curriculum adoption this year which we will be utilizing during our ELA instruction. During the language arts time we will be using our Benchmark curriculum and will work on the following Common Core skills:
For all up to date information on the unit we are studying please keep an eye out for the "Family Letter" that goes home once every three weeks. In this letter you will find a description of the current unit of study as well as a list of activities designed to build the skills and concepts your child is learning in class.
Math
Your child will receive math lessons based on Common Core National Standards each day. Students will be using critical thinking and collaboration when introduced to mathematics concepts. Students will be solving real world problems and have the opportunity for project based learning.
Students classwork will most often be completed in collaborative learning teams. I spend lots of time teaching my 4th graders communication and active listening skills, and they have the opportunity to earn group points for properly demonstrating those skills. In their learning teams they are highly encouraged to elaborate on their thinking, explain their reasoning, and question others thinking in appropriate ways.
For all up to date information on the unit we are studying please keep an eye out for the "Math Family Flyer" that goes home every time we begin a new unit of study. This flyer has tons of useful information including the math standards we will be focusing on, as well as academic vocabulary. We will also be utilizing TenMarks online curriculum that allows you and your student to log in, work on assignments, and track progress all year long.
Science & Social Studies
Science and Social Studies will be integrated into our morning block ELA curriculum, as well as during our afternoon block. We will be utilizing hands-on science labs, lessons from Mystery Science, and G.L.A.D. strategies to teach these subjects.
MindUP
The MindUP curriculum scaffolds core academic programs, delivering a set of social, emotional and self-regulatory strategies and skills, developed for pre-K through middle school students.
The MindUP curriculum helps children:
Thrively is an online curriculum that allows our students to discover and research their own personal interests, whatever they may be! Students begin by taking the strength assessment that will bring self-awareness about their own personal strengths and interests. Then they work through playlists, courses and projects designed to help them find purpose and built skills and experience in areas they are drawn to. Students will have the option to work in groups or as individuals with the support of me through all the courses. The best part is their entire journey they will captured by a digital portfolio.
